CALIFORNIA AND THE AMERICAN DREAM, a new four-part Documentary Series
narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Linda Hunt, explores the dynamics of culture, community and identity in one of the world's most diverse regions. In the last 35 years, California, a state with the world's sixth-largest economy, has seen dramatic changes in social, demographic and cultural trends, which have transformed the state so much that it bears little resemblance to the Hollywood dreamscape projected in previous
decades. The Series premieres nationally on PBS, Thursdays, April 13-May 4, 2006 at 10 PM (check your local listings) to find out more about the Series, our community outreach campaign, or purchase a DVD or VHS of the Series. at Visit us on the web at http://www.californiadreamseries.org/>www.californiadreamseries.org or

California ’s “Lost” Tribes (Broadcast: April 13)
Producer/Director: Jed Riffe
Co-Producer: Jack Kohler (California Tribal member Karuk, Yurok, Hoopa)
In a few short years, some American Indian Tribes in California went from being the poorest people in the state to the richest gaining extraordinary wealth from Casino gaming. California’s ‘Lost’ Tribes weighs the impact of casino gaming on Indian self-determination, explores the
historical underpinnings of Tribal sovereignty, the evolution of Tribal gaming, and its effects on California’s Native peoples and their non-Indian neighbors.
The Price of Renewal (Broadcast: April 20)
Producer/Director: Paul Espinosa
What are the challenges of crafting a vibrant urban village from an ethnically, culturally and economically diverse population? This perceptive documentary examines issues of community development, philanthropy and civic engagement by chronicling the long-term redevelopment of the once-deteriorating neighborhood of City Heights in San Diego . City Heights exemplifies patterns of immigration, migration, and gentrification common to many American cities.

The New Los Angeles (Broadcast: April 27)
Producer/Director: Lyn Goldfarb
The New Los Angeles paints a portrait of an extraordinary city poised to reframe America ’s dialogue about urban political and economic change. This powerful documentary travels from the racially charged elections that brought Mayor Tom Bradley to power in 1973, to the historic 2005 election of LA’s first Latino mayor in more than 130 years, Antonio Villaraigosa. Along the way, The New Los Angeles examines how race, labor and immigration have shaped and reshaped the city’s political life and landscape.

Ripe for Change (Broadcast: May 4)
Producers: Emiko Omori and Jed Riffe Director: Emiko Omori
This fascinating documentary explores the intersection of food and politics in California over the last 30 years from the politically charged 1960s, when food and the way that it’s grown became part of the political dialogue, to the present concerns about health and diminishing resources. Ripe for Change brings to life the powerful stories of both large and small family farmers in California , who are struggling in an increasingly globalized market.

Orquesta Tipica wins the audience award at the Beverly Hills Film Festival

Red Creek Production’s Orquesta Tipica: Tango or Death took home the audience award at the 2006 Beverly Hills Film Festival. The movie chronicles the emergence of the Orquesta Tipica Fernandez Fierro, the first new Tango Orchestra in Argentina in many decades and their crusade to make the genre popular for new a generation of fans worldwide. It was filmed in Argentina, Italy, Germany, Holland, Switzerland and Austria. It also features one of most exciting soundtracks in recent times. The BHFF screening took place on Friday night at the Clarity Theater in Beverly Hills to a several days in advance sold out crowd. It was the project’s premiere and we were only done editing about 48 hours before the screening. These re-edit had the purpose of giving our previous working cut a tighter three acts structure and to better developed our main characters. I actually left the theater feeling I still need to shorten the third act by 3 or 4 minutes, but (I guess) that didn’t matter to the audience at the BHFF. They laugh a lot and even applauded a couple of times during the screening. It was great to see them enjoying the film so much. We will now continue to “ajustar la maquina” for the final cut of Orquesta Tipica: Tango or Death, looking for more festivals to screen it, as well as
strongly pursuing opportunities for US and European distribution for the film and the soundtrack. Orquesta Tipica: Tango or Death opens in theaters in Argentina on the
second half of 2006. And, the Orquesta Tipica Fernandez Fierro, back from Spain and Portugal, is getting ready for its first ever US tour. Saludos a todos! Nico Entel

Character Breakdown: Steve - 20-28 white or Latino (but completely Americanized) - a slacker, coach potato, video game addict with a heart of gold. Steve is filled with potential and dreams, but lacks the courage to make it happen. He's settled into a routine of working at Target to pay the rent and choking down bong loads to dull the nagging pain of quiet desperation in his gut. He's so out of it - he's in complete denial of his girlfriend's exasperation - Steve doesn't even remember she told him that she was going to Mexico until after she's gone! But the inner "man" and "artist" are awakening in him when he finds himself abandoned. Grabbing some basic supplies he dashes off to Mexico and discovers himself along the way.
Joy - Steve's ex-girlfriend 20-28. An all-knowing, depressive, but refreshingly honest Goth rock, punk rocker. Addicted to the "half empty glass" of life, but has her moments. Although a pain in the neck - she's a true friend who steers Steve on the right path to finding his girlfriend.
Cindy - Steve's ex-girlfriend 20-28. An attractive, but self absorbed, sex addict. Really not the nicest person, but entertaining. She's completely full of herself (especially since she got accepted to graduate school,) likes to talk non-stop. Always on the look out for an opportunity to
advance herself. Likes to pounce on naive young men for quickie affairs. Sleeps with Steve because she thinks he's doing a reality TV show and she might get a part.
Nina - Steve's ex-girlfriend 20-28. An attractive, charming user. Means well, in fact she's very nice, but has a bad habit of borrowing money from boyfriends and not returning it. A small army of disgruntled ex's is looking for her. Consoles Steve about his lost girlfriend, but ends up
getting twenty dollars offered him.
Rhona - Steve's soul mate 20-28. An attractive, intelligent young woman. Into archeology and Latino culture. Very practical and mature for her age - although not a prude or a pill - she has a wacky side. She has a big heart and believes in Steve, but has gotten fed up with his lying on the couch and wasting away his life playing video games, Rhona has decided to act - She leaves for Mexico to dig on some ruins, hoping Steve will follow.
The Crow Woman - 40-60's a female shamen who guides Steve on his journey through Mexico . An ancient spirit who guides lost souls and helps Steve find his true path in life. She appears randomly through most of the film, often after Steve has encountered a crow. Near the end, she appears in human form and confronts Steve in a small haunted pueblo and gives him advice about how to touch his true self.
Miss Gloria - 40-50 a tough as nails Latina woman. Once a prostitute, she's now a madam in charge of a small Mexican brothel that Steve ends up staying in when the owner, Harry, takes pity on him and gives him a room for a few nights. Miss Gloria runs a tight ship. She can handle a drunken customer and is quick with a gun. Although not a warm and fuzzy type - she has a touch
of romance and sentimentality. She gives Steve "tips" that she thinks will help him win Rhona back.
The Old Lady - 60-70's an old, kind hearted Mexican woman who takes Steve in after he crashes his car and injures himself. She gives up her own bed and sleeps on the couch for him. She nurses him back to health and asks for nothing in return. Doesn't speak English. Has two beloved Chijuajuas that she spoils.
