Latino
Producers Academy™
August 8 – 18, 2006 Tucson, AZ
Application Deadline – June
7, 2006
A
NALIP National signature program,
in association with UCLA School of Theater,
Film and TV Professional Certificate Program
and the University of Arizona Department of
Media Arts, Time Warner, Nielsen Media Research,
Southwest Airlines and the Rockefeller Foundation
A
documentary or narrative feature Producer
is the person who causes a film to be made,
and made well. NALIP believes that a Producer
is the creative originator of films, a self-starter
who recognizes ideas that have creative or
commercial merit. Producers must have passion,
a sensitivity for story and audience, plus
the organizational ability and practical smarts
to put together a project and guide it to
and through the marketplace. The goal of NALIP’s
Latino Producers Academy is to give our Fellows
the practical skills and knowledge to accomplish
their personal goals and artistic dreams as
filmmakers.
The LPA Invites Applications from
Documentary Producers in two categories:
Documentary producer/directors in development
or production who have proposals and sample
tapes, invited with their producer/director
partners Documentary producers in post-production,
who have rough cuts, invited with their editors
The LPA Invites Applications from
Narrative Feature Producers in two categories:
Feature producers (including producer/directors
or producer/writers) in development who have
viable scripts ready for packaging and advancement
towards production
Feature producers and their directors who
have scripts in advanced stages of development
with or ready to package (e.g. budget, executive
summary, attachments)
The
2006 LPA includes hands-on practicum for Producers
at all stages of their professional development.
Documentaries in post-production will have
opportunities to re-cut and score sequences
with intensive mentoring on their rough cuts
and completion plans. Feature projects with
directors will work with crews and casts to
rehearse, shoot, cut and score scenes from
their upcoming production. Documentary and
Feature projects in development will benefit
from comprehensive skills development with
an opportunity to return with a rough cut
or director in a future year.
This program is competitive and highly selective.
It is open exclusively to NALIP members, and
only to filmmakers with produced work on which
they played a key creative role. All Accepted
Fellows are invited on full scholarship: materials,
lodging, meals and local transportation provided
by our supporters, plus honoraria for documentary
editors. Applications are evaluated by a professional
panel that considers the viability of each
project, the type and quality of your prior
work, your creative plans and commitment to
a career in producing & media leadership,
plus your potential to benefit from the Academy
curriculum and opportunity.
The
2006 Latino Producers Academy is made possible
by the generous support of:
Access Tucson; the AMPAS Foundation; ASU;
Cox Communications; FedEX-Kinko’s; Ford
Foundation; FOX Broadcasting; Hanson Arizona

GAYTINO!
April 26 – June 11 Kirk Douglas Theatre

NALIP member Dan
Guerrero is GAYTINO
At a certain point in his life, would-be Broadway star-cum-talent
manager-cum-producer Dan Guerrero decided
to dedicate himself to improving the depiction of Latinos
in the media. In his one-man show "Gaytino!"
-- part of Center Theater Group's "Solomania!" festival
-- he lands on a good way of putting forth such a positive
image: He tells his own, upbeat story. This man has lived
an extremely charmed life, and he offers up a quite charming
depiction of it.
One-person shows
often -- maybe even usually -- deal with identity politics,
and since Guerrero is both gay and Mexican-American, the subject
informs his life and therefore his story. But what's nice
about "Gaytino!" is how unfettered it is with obstacles
or regrets. Did being Latino inhibit his performance career?
Perhaps, but he soon went on to a great career as a talent
manager instead. Was it hard, even lonely, growing up gay
in East L.A.? Maybe it would have been, if he didn't have
a fantastic best friend.

LBA
NEWS May 2006
Moctezuma Esparza to Serve as Honorary Chair
of LBA Sol Awards
Hollywood producer Moctezuma Esparza, whose credits include
“Selena” and the “Milagro Beanfield War,”
has agreed to serve as the Honorary Chair of the
LBA’s 30th Anniversary Sol Business Awards,
June 9, at the Rose Chateau in Bel Air.
“We’re absolutely thrilled that Moctezuma has
lent his name, talents and business credentials to the organization
as we celebrate our 30th anniversary,” said LBA Chairman
Rick Sarmiento. “He stands alone among Latino producers
and business people in Hollywood and has an incredible track
record to prove it.”
Sarmiento said that Esparza will add a “Hollywood
Flavor” to the gala and help attract celebrities, entertainment
industry officials and other local business leaders. Esparza’s
producer credits include “Walkout,” the 2006 HBO
film chronicling the 1968 East Los Angeles high school boycott
and walkout; “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge,”
the 1999 biopic staring Halle Berry; “Selena”
starring Jennifer Lopez and Edward James Olmos; and the landmark
1982 film, “The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez.”
ADOLESCENT
ADJUSTMENTS
When Linwood Boomer wrote the pilot for "Malcolm in the
Middle," he never considered the practical aspects of
producing a series about a boy genius. Once in pre-production,
he realized how difficult it would be to find a child actor
capable of pulling off the script's technical requirements.
