NALIP Board Member Porfirio Piña Promoted to Senior Director, Latin Music at BMI
Porfirio Piña has been promoted to Senior Director, Latin Music at BMI, it was announced today by Delia Orjuela, Assistant Vice President, Latin Music. Piña, who is based in the New York office, previously was Director in that department and will continue to report to Orjuela.
In his role at the performing right organization, Piña continues to establish and maintain relationships with songwriters and publishers, as well as provide assistance with all administrative and creative functions. He is also responsible for coordinating and participating in special conferences, showcases and events, both locally and nationally.
"Porfirio has displayed amazing initiative in representing BMI in multiple genres of music, reaching beyond previous boundaries," said Orjuela. "He has gone beyond what was expected when presenting our songwriters in showcases, bringing in corporate sponsors and generating a higher level of excitement. He is responsive to the needs of our affiliates, whether they be newcomer or accomplished, and he is active in community programs that make a difference."
Piña serves on the Board of Directors of the BMI Foundation and the Board of Directors of National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP). He is also Director of the BMI Foundation’s peermusic Latin Scholarship, a national competition for young Latin songwriters and composers. Now in its sixth year, the $5,000 scholarship competition is open to college students in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and seeks to identify and reward young talent in the Latin genre.
Piña joined BMI’s Writer/Publisher Relations department in March 2005 after working in various positions in music publishing, marketing, promotions and publicity, including as Director of Sales & Marketing for independent label Latino Music and Product Manager for Palm Pictures. He was also President and Co-Owner of two artist management and music production companies, Double P Music and PNP Productions. He attended both MTI Business School and Business Automation School in New York.
Broadcast Music, Inc.® (BMI) is an American performing right organization that represents more than 375,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers in all genres of music and more than 6.5 million works. BMI’s most recent financial results, $839 million in performing right collections for its fiscal year ending June 30, 2007, were the highest for any copyright organization in the world. BMI has represented the most popular and beloved music from around the world for over 65 years. The non-profit-making U.S. corporation collects license fees from businesses that use music, which it then distributes as royalties to the musical creators and copyright owners it represents.
Call for Applications: Writers on the Verge
Writers on the Verge is a 10-week program focused on polishing writers and readying them for a staff writer position on a television series. We are looking for writers who are “almost there,” but need that final bit of preparation with their writing and personal presentation skills. We particularly encourage writers of diverse backgrounds to apply.
The program will consist of two night classes, which will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays (7-10pm), weekly at NBC in Universal City, CA. Once accepted, students must attend all classes, and turn in all written assignments.
Classes concentrate on creating an exceptional spec script and understanding the dynamics of pitching oneself in the television industry. Writers are given the chance to interact with industry players ranging from network executives to showrunners to agents, and receive valuable feedback on their work and pitch style. Writing assignments on a NBC television show may be available after successful completion of the program, but are not a guarantee. Past participants have gone on to series including Cold Case, Burn Notice, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and upcoming NBC series, My Own Worst Enemy, Friday Night Lights and The Listener.
