The deadline for the P.O.V. Open Call For Entries for the 2009 Broadcast Season is June 27th.

P.O.V., public television’s premiere showcase for independent non-fiction film, seeks submissions from all perspectives to showcase in annual PBS series. P.O.V. welcomes all subjects, styles and lengths. Unfinished films may be eligible for completion funds. Open Call guidelines are available for review at www.pbs.org/pov/forproducers

Deadline Approaching: The Council on Foundations Film & Video Festival

Deadline: June 27, 2008

The Council on Foundations and Grantmakers in Film + Electronic Media (GFEM) are seeking submissions of films and videos for the Council on Foundations' 42nd Annual Film & Video Festival to be held May 4-6 2009, in Atlanta, Georgia.

The festival showcases films, videos, and television programs that have received support from foundations, corporate giving programs, and donor networks, with the aim of encouraging grantmakers to use media to advance their philanthropic goals. The festival promotes foundation support of creative, high-quality productions that expand the boundaries of the use of media for the social good.

Submissions may target local, state, regional, national, and international audiences. The committee will give special consideration to projects that demonstrate innovative strategies for distribution, outreach, public education, and civic engagement, such as the use of print or broadcast journalism, websites, networking, schools, libraries, or the meetings and conferences of nonprofit organizations.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible, projects must have received full or partial funding for either production or distribution from a private, community, operating, or corporate foundation, a corporate giving program, or a donor network. The grantmaker does not have to be a member of the Council or GFEM. The Council will not consider submissions that have been funded solely by public agencies or federal or state grants. The films and videos must have been completed within the past two years. Works may be of any length-from feature length to a brief public service announcement. No works in progress will be considered. All submission forms, DVDs, and entry fees must be received by June 27.

NALIP Discount for Silver Tongues Comedy Show Tonight

The Silver Tongues Comedy Show is a weekly show every Thursday in Silverlake at Zen Sushi. This week's headliner is Joey Medina from 96.3 FM Latino, one of the Original Latin Kings of Comedy. The show also features Noel Elgrably who is the only Sephardic (Spanish Jew) working comedian around. The host is a Brooklyn, New York born and Detroit, MI raised Puerto Rican named Sandro Rodriguez and along with regular opener Dustin Torres (Mexican-American from Texas) we have an R rated, unfiltered and raw stand up comedy show. Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez
NALIP Lifetime Achievement in Advocacy winner recognized

Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez, associate professor in the School of Journalism at The University of Texas at Austin and recipient of the NALIP Lifetime Achievement Award in Advocacy, will be inducted into the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' (NAHJ) Hall of Fame next month.

She will be inducted along with New York Daily News columnist Juan González and 19th century journalist Francisco P. Ramirez, editor of Los Angeles' first Spanish-language newspaper, El Clamor Público.

A former journalist who worked for the Boston Globe, WFAA-TV in Dallas and the Dallas Morning News, Rivas-Rodriguez has advocated for improved coverage and inclusion of Latinos in media. She was on the committee that organized and founded the NAHJ in 1982 and she established two of the NAHJ's most successful student projects: a convention newspaper produced by college students and professionals, and a nationwide high school writing contest. The newspaper has become the model for other industry organizations such as the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the National Association of Black Journalists and the Asian American Journalists Association as a way to develop mentoring relationships and to train students.

Rivas-Rodriguez is the founder and director of the U.S. Latino & Latina WWII Oral History Project, which has collected interviews with more than 650 men and women throughout the country. She gained national prominence after taking a leading role in protests in 2007 against the PBS documentary "The War" about World War II. The film, which originally excluded the stories of Latino veterans, was eventually modified.

Created in 2000, NAHJ's Hall of Fame is reserved for journalists and industry pioneers whose national or local efforts have resulted in a greater number of Latinos entering the journalism profession or have helped to improve news coverage of the nation's Latino community.

"Our Hall of Fame Gala is one of NAHJ's greatest traditions when we pause to celebrate the giants of our industry," said Iván Román, NAHJ's executive director. "Because of Juan and Maggie's foresight and their activism, NAHJ is a leader in many ways, from creating innovative programs that serve as models for the entire industry to speaking out on Capitol Hill on legislation that impacts minority media owners. Fewer people know the story of Francisco P. Ramírez, but once you hear it, you will be inspired.''

Past NAHJ Hall of Fame honorees include such pioneering journalists as Rubén Salazar, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times and the news director of KMEX who was killed in East Los Angeles, Ignacio E. Lozano Sr., who founded La Opinión, the nation's oldest Spanish-language daily newspaper and George Ramos, a three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter with the Los Angeles Times.

NALIP member Tracy Perez is producing - and acting in one of the pieces in - NO MATINEES, six evenings of theater authored by writer J. Anthony Roman.

J. Anthony Roman, a young veteran of the independent theater circuit, has been producing his own work in New York City since the age of 18. At 29, this young, Hispanic, New York Native gathers an impressive roster of directors and actors to showcase some of his strongest words and stories in NO MATINEES.

Composed of five short one acts, and one monologue, NO MATINEES depicts unrelated situations with each vignette existing in their own world. However, each piece tackles issues directly impacting the modern American way.
