POST-PRODUCTION

Music for "Whose Barrio?" Film

Looking for music in the following styles for the film "Whose Barrio?": Salsa - Fania style songs, Mambo - Palladium years style songs, Danzon, Danza, Puerto Rican Folk Conjunto.

A film by Ed Morales & Laura Rivera
CONTACT - ED MORALES, 347-271-4615, 646-342-2100, emorale@optonline.net

Whose Barrio? is an emotionally charged look at the changes in Manhattan's Spanish Harlem as real estate speculation pushes rents and property values past the point of affordability for most area residents. By interviewing long-time East Harlemites and new arrivals, and digging deep into the flavor of a neighborhood long regarded as a cultural homeland for Latinos and other ethnic groups, the film reveals a complex web of individual and community interests. Directed and produced by Ed Morales and Laura Rivera, WHOSE BARRIO? is having its world premiere at the New York International Latino Film Festival on August 2, 2009.

The movie follows the stories of Jos Rivera and James Garcia, who represent the old guard and the newcomers in the neighborhood, respectively. Longtime East Harlem tenant James Barrow worries that a series of crane accidents in the city may strike home because of a construction project next door. Organizers for Movement for Justice in El Barrio have come to the aid of tenants in tenement housing now overseen by Dawnay Day Group, a multinational real estate developer with offices in London. Tenant Paula Serrano describes the demonstrations and legal actions taken by the group, and warns against the changes developers have in store for the neighborhood. City Council member Melissa Mark Viverito engages in dialog with the community over a new development project for El Barrio proposed by the city and wrestles with compromise even as she strives to improve the situation.

Filled with local flavor, including appearances by plena legend Benny Ayala, the poet Mariposa, and activist Dylcia Pagn, "Whose Barrio?" is a love song to a neighborhood nobody wants to lose. The stories of individual choices and concerns for the future give way to a vocal debate between different constituencies of the community. While everyone seems to agree that change is inevitable, the struggle intensifies over who gets a say in what some call the neighborhood's development, and others its gentrification.
